The HDL-Atherosclerosis Treatment Study (HATS) was a three-year, double-blind angiographic trial of 160 patients with coronary disease, low HDL and normal LDL. Subjects were randomized to simvastatin plus niacin or to placebo. The placebo group demonstrated an increase of 3.9% mean stenosis while the simvastatin-niacin group demonstrated 0.4% regression (P<0.001). Major cardiovascular events, including need for revascularization, were significantly decreased in the simvastatin-niacin group (P = 0.04) (Brown et al. 2001). [Pg.699]
