Silicon tetrafiuoride

Hydrogen fluoride is produced worldwide in 10 ta by reaction of fluorspar with sulfuric acid (equation 1). The reaction is endothermic (AF/298 = 59kJmol ) and is carried out in rotary furnaces that produce up to 45td . The crude HF is scrubbed by H2SO4 and purified further by distillation as required. Silicon tetrafiuoride is a by-product from silicate impurities (equation 2) and is recovered as H2SiFe (equations). Another by-product, CaS04, is used in cement production and other applications. ...

Silicon tetrafiuoride, SiF4, interacts with BSD in ether at temperatures below —40°C to form an intense blue complex, BSD SiF4 (31), which decomposes above — 40°C into its components (66). In the third period (only the representative elements in that period being considered for the time being) the number of orbitals is nine. The tendency of magnesium to fill up its orbitals seems to be the reason for the activity of Grignard reagents. The tendency of aluminum chloride to fill up an empty orbital in the aluminum atom results in its familiar activity as an acid catalyst. The formation of SiFe ion apparently involves the filling of two orbitals of silicon in silicon tetrafiuoride by paired electrons... 

With the exception of carbon tetrafiuoride and silicon tetrachloride, all other halides, EX4, of Group IV metals react with BSD (27, 50, 63). Reactions with SiF4, GeCl4, and SnCl4 are discussed separately here because they run quite differently.
