This volume of Topics in Current Chemistry aims to highlight major developments in the field and it shows the efforts of chemists from various subdisciplines of chemistry to design new dendritic molecules focusing on novel properties, functions, and potential applications. Hyperbranched/dendritic molecules containing silicon, phosphorus, and other elements are reported apart from hydrocarbon, carbohydrate and nucleic acid cascade molecules.

Park s group has explored hyperbranched graft chemistry of aziridine on amine functionalized silica surfaces (Eqs. 18 and 19) [74]. Using silicon and silica substrates that have been functionalized with (3-aminopropyl)dieth-oxymethylsilane as initiator substrates, hyperbranched polyethyleneimine grafts were synthesized using aziridine monomers. 

The incorporation of siloles in polymers is of interest and importance in chemistry and functionalities. Some optoelectronic properties, impossible to obtain in silole small molecules, may be realized with silole-containing polymers (SCPs). The first synthesis of SCPs was reported in 1992.21 Since then, different types of SCPs, such as main chain type 7r-conjugated SCPs catenated through the aromatic carbon of a silole, main chain type cr-conjugated SCPs catenated through the silicon atom of a silole, SCPs with silole pendants, and hyperbranched or dendritic SCPs (Fig. 2), have been synthesized.10 In this chapter, the functionalities of SCPs, such as band gap, photoluminescence, electroluminescence, bulk-heterojunction solar cells, field effect transistors, aggregation-induced emission, chemosensors, conductivity, and optical limiting, are summarized. 

Moran et al. have also reported the preparation of hyperbranched ferrocenyl. S7-based polymers (Figure 8.1). The construction of ferrocenyl —silicon polymers 40 and 41 was effected by the reaction of dilithioferrocene-TMEDA with the tetrachlorosilane 35 (see Scheme 8.10) and the Pt-mediated hydrosilylation of l,l -divinylferrocene with tetrasilyl-hydride 38. The 3-dimensional motif exhibited by hyperbranched polymers 40 and 41 is analogous to that depicted by the ferrocenyl — silicon network structures 38,43 42 and 43 (Figure 8.2).
