The attachment of cells to surfaces is inherently a function of surface composition. The most commonly used materials in microfluidic device fabrication are silicon dioxide (glass), poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), and silicon. PDMS and silicon are hydrophobic and this characteristic can be exploited to coat these surfaces with ligands by adsorption.
