Using mixed solvents in combination with supercritical drying [52], powders formed by nanocomposite particles with a magnetic core of grouped iron oxide nanoparticles surrounded by a silica shell were obtained. In such case the oleic acid-capped magnetic cores of 7 nm diameter act as nucleation sites for hydrolyzed tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) to condensate, leading to the construction of
