Sihcon

The stopcock should preferably be lubricated with Sihcone stopcock grease, and held in position by a rubber band. [Pg.180]

Other forms of carbon-carbon composites have been or are being developed for space shutde leading edges, nuclear fuel containers for sateUites, aircraft engine adjustable exhaust nozzles, and the main stmcture for the proposed National Aerospace plane (34). For reusable appHcations, a siHcon carbide [409-21 -2] based coating is added to retard oxidation (35,36), with a boron [7440-42-8] h Lsed sublayer to seal any cracks that may form in the coating. [Pg.5]

Euture appHcations may involve use of SiC as substrates for siHcon chips, making use of the high thermal conductivity of SiC and its close thermal expansion match to siHcon. The low density and high stiffness of siHcon carbides may also result in appHcations in space. One such appHcation is for space-based mirrors, making use of the high degree of surface poHsh possible on dense SiC. [Pg.321]

SiHcon nitride (see Nitrides) is a key material for stmctural ceramic appHcations in environments of high mechanical and thermal stress such as in vehicular propulsion engines. Properties which make this material uniquely suitable are high mechanical strength at room and elevated temperatures, good oxidation and creep resistance at high temperatures, high thermal shock resistance, exceUent abrasion and corrosion resistance, low density, and, consequently, a low moment of inertia. Additionally, siHcon nitride is made from abundant raw materials. [Pg.321]

Material System. There are two basic techniques for the industrial synthesis of Si3N powder, although other methods are available (36). The older and most widely used method is the nitridation of siHcon. SiHcon is heated in a nitrogen [7727-37-9] atmosphere at temperatures of 1100—1450°C in... [Pg.321]
