Volatile organic compounds signatures

Besides being found in body fluids and tissues, some markers are associated with the smell of breath and skin. The correlation between breath smell and disease has been reported in literature (Matsumura et al., 2010 Horvath et al., 2009 Silveira-Moriyama et al., 2008), and these signature molecules are volatile organic compounds found at concentrations lower than the ppb range. These markers are formed as metabolic products generating a fingerprint of the diseased state (Simon, 2010). [Pg.185]
