EIS data analysis is commonly carried out by fitting it to an equivalent electric circuit model. An equivalent circuit model is a combination of resistances, capacitances, and/or inductances, as well as a few specialized electrochemical elements (such as Warburg diffusion elements and constant phase elements), which produces the same response as the electrochemical system does when the same excitation signal is imposed. Equivalent circuit models can be partially or completely empirical. In the model, each circuit component comes from a physical process in the electrochemical cell and has a characteristic impedance behaviour. The shape of the model s impedance spectrum is controlled by the style of electrical elements in the model and the interconnections between them (series or parallel combinations). The size of each feature in the spectrum is controlled by the circuit elements parameters. [Pg.84]

The first reliable spectroscopic analysis of saturated sulfur vapor was published by Berkowitz and Marquart [28] who used a combination of a Knud-sen effusion cell with a mass spectrometer and generated the sulfur vapor by evaporating either elemental sulfur (low temperature region) or certain metal sulfides such as HgS which decompose at high temperatures to sulfur and metal vapor. These authors observed ions for all molecules from S2 to Ss and even weak signals for Sg and Sio. From the temperature dependence of the ion intensities the reaction enthalpies for the various equilibria (1) were derived (see Table 1). Berkowitz and Marquart careMly analyzed their data to minimize the influence of fragmentation processes in the ion source of the spectrometer. They also calculated the total pressure of sulfur vapor from their data and compared the results with the vapor pressure measurements by Braune et al. [26]. In AAS the desired process in the atomizer should stop with the production of ground state atoms. For some elements, the process continues as shown in Fig. 6.16 to produce excited state atoms and ions. If the flame is hot enough for signfficant excitation and ionization to occur, the absorbance signal is decreased because the population of ground state atoms has decreased as a result of ionization and excitation. This is called ionization interference. Ionization interferences are commonly found for the easily ionized alkali metal and alkaline earth elements, even in cool flames.
