Sieve-plate columns weir height

Example 18.6. A sieve-plate column operating at atmospheric pressure is to produce nearly pure methanol from an aqueous feed containing 40 mole percent methanol. The distillate product rate is 5800 kg/h. (a) For a reflux ratio of 3.5 and a plate spacing of 18 in., calculate the allowable vapor velocity and the column diameter. b) Calculate the pressure drop per plate if each sieve tray is in, thick with j-in, holes on a -in. triangular spacing and a weir height of 2 in. (c) What is the froth height in the downcomer ... [Pg.566]

Since the behavior of packed columns [2,3,4, 5] and bubble cap columns [6] has been previously reported, this research at the National Bureau of Standards was primarily concerned with the characteristics of perforated or sieve plate columns. Such parameters as plate spacing, plate geometry, maximum allowable vapor velocity, weir height and downcomer area were investigated, and the results of these investigations were applied to the design of a pilot plant column. [Pg.236]

For sieve or valve plates, h = h , outlet weir height. For bubble-cap plates, h = height of static seal. Tbe original references present vaH-dations against laboratoiy and small-commercial-column data. Modifications of tbe efficiency equation for absorption-stripping are also included. [Pg.1381]

Testing of plates and other devices is carried out by Fractionation Research, Inc. for industrial sponsors. Some of the test data for sieve plates have been published for the cyclohexane//i-heptane and isobu-tane//i-butane systems. Representative data are shown in Fig. 14-43. These are taken from Sakata and Yanagi Jn.stn. Chem. Engis. Symp. See. No. 56, 3.2/21 (1979)] and Yanagi and Sakata [Jnd. Eng. Chem. Proc. Des. Devel, 21, 712 (1982)]. The column diameter was 1.2 m, tray spacing was 600 mm, and weir height was 50 mm. [Pg.1384]

Active area of plate is 88 percent of the total column cross-sectional area The total area of sieve holes is 5 percent of the active area of the plate Weir height = 2.0 in. [Pg.678]

Plate efficiency is a function of the rate of mass transfer between liquid and vapor. The prediction of mass-transfer coefficients in sieve trays and their relationship to plate efficiency are discussed in Chap. 21. Some published values of the plate efficiency of a 1.2-m column are shown in Fig. 18.34. This column had sieve trays with 12.7-mm holes and 8.32 percent open area, a 51-mm weir height, and... [Pg.574]
