Shielded-arc welding

AWS) has issued specifications covering the various filler-metal systems and processes (2), eg, AWS A5.28 which appHes to low alloy steel filler metals for gas-shielded arc welding. A typical specification covers classification of relevant filler metals, chemical composition, mechanical properties, testing procedures, and matters related to manufacture, eg, packaging, identification, and dimensional tolerances. New specifications are issued occasionally, in addition to ca 30 estabUshed specifications. Filler-metal specifications are also issued by the ASME and the Department of Defense (DOD). These specifications are usually similar to the AWS specification, but should be specifically consulted where they apply. 

The use of carbon dioxide gas for shielded arc welding with semiautomatic microwire welding equipment has led to welding speeds up to 10 times those obtainable within conventional equipment. No cleaning or wire bmshing of the welds is required (45) (see Welding). 

Aluminum and Alloys Aluminum and its alloys are made in practically all the forms in which metals are produced, including castings. Thermal conductivity of aluminum is 60 percent of that of pure copper, and unalloyed aluminum is used in many heat-transfer applications. Its high electrical conductivity makes aluminum popular in electrical apphcations. Aluminum is one of the most workable of metals, and it is usually joined by inert-gas-shielded arc-welding techniques.

Clothing — Wear wool, leather, or cotton treated clothing to reduce flammabihty for gas shielded arc welding. Long sleeves and pants without cuffs/front pockets are recommended to avoid catching sparks. 

Cr is formed from Cr" and from metallic Cr by oxidation, primarily by ozone. In gas shielded arc welding, ozone itself is formed by the interaction of oxygen and ultra-violet radiation emitted from the arc.

This standard specifies requirements for classification of nonconsumable tungsten electrodes for inert gas shielded arc welding, and for plasma welding, cutting, and thermal spraying. 

Weldii. Ti-3A1-2.5V has good weldahiHty and, like all titanium alloys, is weldable by all methods except shielded arc welding and submerged arc welding (because no flux is permitted).
