Shelter dominance

After dominance is established, the dominant male occupies a "preferred" large shelter which becomes a focus of social interactions. Mature, premolt females visit frequently (31,32). For cohabitation and subsequent mating, females in naturalistic aquaria chose the dominant male over subdominants (31). In choice tests females prefer larger dominant males (23). Females make these behavioral decisions both from a distance and at the shelter entrance. Discrimination by females is lost when males are catheterized and can be regained when that male s urine is artificially released near the male (23). Thus, male urine cues for female choice are implied but have not been identified. 

Communication and information handling may be dominant modes of easing the strenuous demands for food, shelter, energy transport and security, as well as health and education. And the former remain also primary demands for raw materials in a crowded planet. So in looking toward tomorrow, the role of polymers would extend beyond the major part they play already in the conventional functions of society which we have noted. 

Of the 250,000 species of known plants, about 170,000 grow in the tropical rain forest, more than half native to the Americas. Many of these, mostly broad-leaved evergreens, large ferns, lianas, and epiphytic orchids, have been transplanted to other tropical regions or have adapted to indoor culture. Tropical rain forests in the Indo-Pacific are dominated by resinous trees in the Dipterocarpaceae, which make a sheltering canopy. The African tropical rain forest is the poorest in species. 

The two reports that started the deliberations of the Shelter Island Conference in 1947 and dominated much of the ensuing discussions were given by Wilis Lamb and Rabi. Both reports brought fresh data to the participants, data laid bare by the technology that came out of World War II. In the process. Lamb and Rabi exposed the possible discrepancy in Dirac theory that laid dormant throughout the world conflict.
