New techniques are being used to locate brain damage from fetal alcohol exposure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for example, has been used to analyze the shape of the corpus callosum (the thick band of nerve fibers connecting the two hemispheres of the brain) in adult males who were exposed prenatally to alcohol and relate the measurements to neuropsychological deficits.34 The men showed more variability of corpus-callosum shape and the excess shape variation is associated with behavioral deficits.
