Severely polluted sites

Real life may involve the participation of more than one species in the photocatalytic process, due to existence of several pollutants in the feed and/or due to formation of intermediate products. As a rule, point-source pollution sites are easily identified (large chemical plants, sewage treatment, military bases, etc.) and can be dealt with more or less satisfactorily by means of regulation and/or public pressure. In contrast, non-point-source pollution (homes, restaurants, dry cleaning establishments, etc.) are far more numerous, widely distributed, and therefore more difficult to identify and regulate. It is particularly important that these smaller sources of pollution adopt the desired pollution prevention attitude. Small colleges are one example of an intermediate source of pollution in which several departments and offices on campus may use, store, and dispose of pollutants quite independently of one another. 

Remediation time is dependent on the nature, concentration, and extent of the pollution and the capacity of the remediation equipment. More extensive polluted sites are cleaned up in sections. Cleanup duration varies from a few months to several years. 

Electrokinetic remediation is highly dependent on rife-specilic geochemical conditions, such as soil composition, native electrolytes, pollutant aging, and pollutant mixtures. Several studies have integrated electrokinetic approaches for effective remediation of challenging polluted sites. Many of these studies are limited to bench-scale studies, and more field studies are needed to determine cost and effectiveness in field applications. Although several technologies have been developed to remediate polluted sites. 

High rates of autism were suspected in five counties of metropolitan, Atlanta, area [14] and in Brick Township, New Jersey [64]. The data collected show that the values for the Atlanta area and for the Brick Township are similar to those for other large urban areas, including Cahfornia, other than the Los Angeles area [33]. These high values are attributed to Atlanta s air pollution [65] and Brick Township s proximity to several Superfund sites [66].
