Sequence encoding

What is the amino acid sequence of the fusion protein Where is the junction between /3-galactosidase and the sequence encoded by the insert (Consult the genetic code table on the inside front cover to decipher the amino acid sequence.)... 

Protein sequences encoded by genome sequences encode biological functions. 

A splice variant can arise when a gene contains at least two introns leading to the possibility that the DNA between them (an exon) may not be included in the final mRNA and protein product. Thus, the final protein product may exist in two forms one containing the amino-acid sequence encoded by the exon that is located between the introns in the original DNA, and another form in which the amino-acid sequence encoded by that exon has been spliced out . These two products are refened to as splice variants. 

However both classes, nucleic acids and proteins, are linear polymers in which the linear (nucleobase or amino acid) sequence encodes the three-dimensional structure and function of the polymer. 

In humans, the structural gene locus is on chromosome 19 (M17), and the gene spans over 40 kilobases (kb) including 18 exons and 17 introns (W2, X2). Neu-roleukin, a protein that acts as both a neurotrophic factor and a lymphokine, has been isolated from mouse salivary glands (G7), and subsequently the primary structure of neuroleukin was found to be identical to that of GPI by comparison of the cDNA sequences (C7, FI). The cDNA sequence encodes 558 amino acid residues. The enzyme consists of two identical subunits with a molecular weight of approximately 63,000 and neuroleukin is active as a monomer.

Finally, RNA editing can be involved, as in the case of the amphibian bombesin-like peptides, where nucleotides in the mRNA are changed and the final protein is not a direct reflection of the sequence encoded in the gene. RNA editing is also seen in the glutamate (Ch. 15) and serotonin receptors (Ch. 13 and Ch. 15) and probably will be found elsewhere as detection methods become more sophisticated.
