In terms of its application, open-ended questions can be the main task in a study, or serve as a complement to other more structured sensory tasks. Are they more efficient than Descriptive Analysis In the former case, the nature and purpose of the questions and responses are simply not comparable to those obtained with Descriptive Analysis. In the latter case, the efficiency of the method would depend to a great extent on the task in which the questions are being included. 

In recent years, the use of consumers in sensory tasks has gained more and more interest. This is particularly true since it has been shown on different occasions that relevant descriptive information can be obtained with consumers. For example, several studies have shown that sensory profiles obtained with consumers match profiles obtained with trained panels (Moskowilz, 1996 Husson et al, 2001 Worch et al, 2010a). 

Because children below the age of 8 years have difficulties to use sensory tasks in an analytical way (whereas they may perform well with the same tasks with a hedonic orientation), it appears quite challenging to apply more classic sensory descriptive techniques to the study of children below the age of 8 and in fact there are very few reports of such studies in the literature. Above 8 years, children can be expected to know how to read and write fluently, which is often necessary for descriptive sensory analysis, although computerization may help to deliver only oral or visual (not written) instructions.

Several authors used scales with elderly panels in sensory tests, to get both hedonic and intensity scores. However, these studies were usually carried out with healthy elderly people, who were able to come into the lab, rather than with frail and dependent elderly people (Kremer et al, 2007 Methven et al, 2012 Mojet et al, 2001 Withers et al, 2013). Furthermore, these authors were interested in the evaluations obtained thanks to the scales rather than in the way elderly people use scales. The capacity of the elderly to execute sensory tasks effectively is still an outstanding issue.
