He has published over 200 papers and patents in the areas of organometallic chemistry and catalysis, coordination chemistry and semiconductor precursors. He is the author of two teaching texts in organometallic chemistry and co-author of the inorganic chemistry textbook Cotton, Wilkinson, Murillo and Bochmann, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, 6th ed. In 2002 he was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Prize for Organometallic Chemistry. 

The most active area of research in printable electronic materials has been the general area of solution-processable (and therefore, potentially printable) semiconductors. In general, the materials development activity in printable semiconductors can be broken down into work on (1) soluble organic semiconductors, (2) soluble organic semiconductor precrusors, and (3) soluble inorganic semiconductor precursors.

Cowley and coworkers , in continuing their search for III-V semiconductor precursors, have proposed [(Bu2Sb)2lnCl]2 for InSb band systems.
