From the earliest times fire has had a great symbolic power for Man, and just like air, earth and water, which can extinguish even the greatest coiiflagraiioiis, it has remained one of the elements which has determined the actions of Man and Nature. I lere we siiall show (without resorting to magic ) how water itself can start a fire. [Pg.37]

One liter beaker, fire-resistant support, safety glasses, protective gloves. Chemicals [Pg.37]

Wood wool or wood shavings, powdered sodium peroxide, mineral or tap water. [Pg.37]

Prior to the demonstration a quantity of wood wool or wood shavings is placed in the beaker and covered with a layer ol powdered sodium peroxide. The experimentalist takes a drink of the water he will use to ignite the wood to show the public ihai ii is normal water and then pours a little of it over the contents of the beaker. The wood shavings very quickly start to burn and in a few seconds ihev are converted to ash. [Pg.37]
