Self-centred

Care should be exercised in the selection of these devices as some are not inherently self-centring and may introduce eccentricity and unbalance into the coupling assembly. This effect shall be evaluated and allowed for when determining coupling potential unbalance... 

The most common method of holding work is in a chuck mounted on the end of the spindle. Several types of chuck are available, the most common being the three-jaw self-centring chuck, the four-jaw independent chuck and the collet chuck. 

Fig 7.14 shows the difference between a 118° conventional point and a 135° split point. Used with high performance CNC machines, the split point is self-centring to ease the start of a drilling operation and requires less force during drilling. 

In the simplified supply chain shown in Figure 19.1 one component of the chain, the manufacturer, measures performance of itself, and of its immediate customer and its immediate supplier. In this example the measurement is seen as being two way, but frequentiy measuranent is self-centred and little effort is made to measure performance from the suppher or customers perspective, let alone try to measure performance for the whole supply chain ... 

From self-centred to supply chain centred... 

There are two ways of measurement, one is to measure activities, and the other is to identify and measure processes. The process-based approach concentrates on the process rather than activities. A complete supply chain is a process. The very name supply chain indicates one entity managed as a whole and not a series of self-centred entities managed independently. The desired end result of the process for a supply chain is to satisfy the customer with the delivery of a perfect order. In a simplified supply chain the process to satisfy a perfect order is ...
