Chromatograms of the brine sample analyzed by P T, SPE, and SPME are illustrated in Fig. 4, with peak identities appearing in Table 4. These results dramatically illustrate how the selection of the sample preparation technique influences the amounts and types of chemicals extracted and detected by an analytical procedure. P T was able to detect a greater number of volatiles in the brine than either SPE or SPME. Most of the volatiles that were detected by P T and not by SPE or SPME were early-eluting fusel oil components.
