This reaction is one of the best examples of the importance of considering AG values rather than AG° the latter is +23.9 kJ/mol, whereas in the cell AG is —1.3 kJ/mol. This reflects the acmal concentrations of the metabolites within the cell. 

Hans Krebs proposed the cycle in 1937 on the basis of experiments on minced pigeon muscle. He received the Nobel prize for medicine and physiology (jointly with Fritz Lipmann) in 1952.
