Segmental design

Compressors built to the API standard are required to have equal thrust capability in both directions that is, the bearing is to be symmetrically constructed. However, the thrust bearings can be combined using various numbers of pads on each side, or a tapered land can be combined with the multiple-segment design. Other combinations of the four thrust bear ings discussed are found in certain isolated applications. [Pg.204]

The most promising types of biologic response modifiers are monoclonal antibodies, cytokines, and fusion proteins.1 Monoclonal antibodies may be chimeric (fused mouse and human segments designated -ximab ), humanized with intermittent murine sequences (designated -zumab ), human backbone with monkey sequences, or fully human.40... [Pg.956]

The site of action on the Na-i- channel for cocaine and its analogs appears to be on the intracellular side of the channel, so cocaine must evidently cross the cell membrane to be effective (Narahashi and Frazier 1971). The Na-i- channel is composed of a large protein divided into a, (31, and (32 subunits. The a subunit is further divided into four domains, each of which contains four transmembrane segments (designated I-IV). [Pg.337]

Customized and flexible screw-element and barrel segment designs, and fast and efficient melting and mixing (both dispersive and distributive) in most TSEs make such equipment very well suited and almost exclusively used for the following polymer processing operations ... [Pg.524]

As to the first problem, even if the rollers are not cooled, the equilibrium temperature during continuous operation is always considerably below the feed temperature because of heat loss due to radiation when the roller surface is not in contact with the hot material (i.e. more than 75%) and due to heat conduction. Nevertheless, surface temperatures of 450-500°C may be reached which, however, can be handled with high speed tool steels. If such steels are used, the segmented design must be applied. [Pg.323]

Thermal expansion during heating of the rollers may be considerable. Therefore, segmented designs that allow for expansion by incorporating a suitably sized gap between the segments at room temperature are nearly always used for hot applications, even if, from a wear point of view, a steel is selected that could be formed into roll tires. [Pg.323]

Schematically (Figure 5), one can compare a separation of two components—one on a long column and one on a short one—and one can see that, with a segmented design one can pull out into the product stream a material that is partially purified or material that is fully purified, and the partially purified material is then sequenced onto another column segment for further purification. [Pg.104]

First of all, the large periodic structure is readily observed in a number of ways. The fibrils, examined with minimal pretreatment (Fig. 25) show alternating dark and light segments designated, respectively, as A and B by Schmitt et al. (192) and as D and H by Wolpers (207). Two of these, one of each kind, form a single period. [Pg.110]
