Sedimentary rock structural configurations

Of interest is the detailed structural configurations that can form in sedimentary rock formations, because hydrocarbons are nearly always found in sedimentary rocks. The structural features of interest are faults and folds [26]. 

The tetrahydrophenanthrene derivative, (l,l,7,8-tetramethyl-l,2,3,4-tetrahydrophenanthrene, 432), has been isolated from a 180 Ma old marine sedimentary rock [198]. Heliophenanthrone (434) was isolated from the aerial parts of Heliotropium ovalifolium. Its structure was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data, and the absolute configuration of the asymmetric centers was determined from LC-NMR data of the Mosher ester derivatives [199]. Petroleum geology is also concerned with the structural configuration of the crast of the earth. This interest includes both large- and small-scale crustal features. On the broadest scale, petrolenm geology is concerned with the formation of sedimentary basins. This is because some basins are highly favorable for petrolerrmgeneration, while others are less suitable. The deposition of petrolerrm source beds varies with basin type, as does the heat flow that is responsible for generating oil and gas from the source rock.
