The nitrogen cycle is the movement of nitrogen through the food chain from simple inorganic compounds, mainly ammonia, to complex organic compounds. [Pg.369]

Nitrogen fixation is the conversion of N2 gas into ammonia, a process carried out by some soil bacteria, cyanobacteria and the symbiotic bacteria Rhizobium that invade the root nodules of leguminous plants. This process is carried out by the nitrogenase complex, which consists of a reductase and an iron-molybdenum-containing nitrogenase. At least 16 ATP molecules are hydrolyzed to form two molecules of ammonia. Leghemoglobin is used to protect the nitrogenase in the Rhizobium from inactivation by 02. [Pg.369]


The movement of water and nutrients from the soil to the upper portions of a plant occurs primarily in the xylem. The xylem sap usually contains about 10 mol m-3 (10 mM)2 inorganic nutrients plus organic forms of nitrogen that are metabolically produced in the root. The xylem is a tissue of various cell types that we will consider in more detail in the final chapter (Section 9.4B,D), when water movement in plants is discussed quantitatively. The conducting cells in the xylem are the narrow, elongated tracheids and the vessel members (also called vessel elements), which tend to be shorter and wider than the tracheids.
