Sealing Laws Limitation

A petroleum refinery was in the process of phasing out compressed asbestos gaskets to conform to new U.S. laws. Asbestos gaskets had been used for years without any significant problems. During the conversion the company mistakenly assumed the nonasbestos substitute gasket would seal the same fluids as the asbestos products if the gaskets were used within the manufacturers temperature limitations. [Pg.135]

California law prescribes a limit of 0.5 g/test for the sum of evaporative emissions from a motor vehicle beginning with model year 2004. Compliance with the limits must be confirmed by defined testing methods. In the 3-day diurnal test, for example, evaporative emissions from the entire vehicle are measured over a 3-day period in a SHED (Sealed Housing for Evaporative Determination) test chamber subjected to a predefined, 24-h temperature stress program (from 18.3 to 40.6 °C). After each 24-h period, the concentration of hydrocarbons (HC in ppm) is measured and converted into HC equivalents (in grams). The highest of the three measured values is then the test result. [Pg.366]

Air-purifying respirators are either half-face or full-face. Half-face air-purlfying respirators are designed to cover the mouth and nose. In contrast, full-face respirators form a positive seal around the eyes, nose, and mouth. These respirators are designed to remove specific contaminants or organic vapors from the air. Concentrations of these contaminants may range from 5 to 50 times the normal exposure limit allowed by law. [Pg.80]
