The cavity transfer mixer (CTM) is a distributive mixing device used as an add-on unit to extruders the barrel and screw have hemispheres cut out of their surfaces to give an overlap of half a pitch. 

Dynamic mixers are a class of secondary mixers where part of the mixing device is aiiowed to move reiative to the barrei and screw surfaces or has an active channei positioned in the barrei waii. In generai, these mixers provide improved mixing over traditionai secondary mixers, but they are more compiicated and costiy to produce, require higher maintenance ieveis, and tend to have higher ieveis of wear. 

A typical screw design for compounding an ABS resin product is shown in Fig. 15.2. This screw was 304.8 mm in diameter, had a length of 7 L/D and a compression ratio of 2.1. The lead length and flight width were 304.8 and 19 mm, respectively. This screw typically operated at 5500 kg/h at a screw speed of 70 rpm. Compression ratios near 2 are very common for these designs. Mixing devices are typically not needed and thus are not used on these types of processes. 

At A < 0, the pump pushes the liquid against the conveying sense of the screw. In this flow range, the screw machine is an excellent mixing device. 

Today, most processes involve some form of mixing. As discussed in the previous section, an integral part of a screw extruder is a mixing zone. In fact, most twin screw extruders are primarily used as mixing devices. Similarly, the plasticating unit of an injection molding... 

The device is mounted and screwed using seals on a multi-plate rig on which the mixing device is located [67].
