Scintillating materials

Scintillation detectors are substances which fluoresce when stmck by x-radiation. Scintillation can, therefore, serve to convert x-ray photons into visible or ultraviolet light. Scintillation materials include thaUium-activatedcrystals of sodium iodide, NaI(Tl), potassium iodide, KI(T1), or cesium iodide, CsI(Tl) crystals of stilbene (a, P-diphenylethylene) [588-59-0] and anthracene [120-12-7] bismuth germanium oxide [12233-56-6] ... [Pg.50]

PO7 and their rare-earth-doped compounds as starting materials for scintillation studies, with the intention of obtaining new scintillation materials with large, light yield and short decay time. [Pg.306]

The secondary electrons emitted from the sample are attracted to the detector by the collector screen. Once near the detector, the secondary electrons are accelerated into the scintillator by a positive potential maintained on the scintillator. Visible light is produced by the reaction of the secondary electrons with the scintillator material. The emitted light is detected by a photomultiplier tube, which is optically coupled to the scintillator via a light pipe. The PMT signal is then transferred to the grid of a cathode ray tube (CRT). Scintillation counters use materials that produce light when stimulated by radiation. Scintillation materials include sodium iodide crystals and special plastics. Radiation is measured by exposing the scintillation material to radiation and using a photomultiplier tube to count the number of resulting flashes. Photomultiplier tubes are photocells that convert light into electrical signals that can be amplifled and measured. [Pg.257]

In a conventional logging apparatus, the scintillation material is comprised of a specially formulated organic polymer or plastic. Many conventional plastic scintillators do not exhibit acceptable mechanical and optical properties when used at relatively high temperature of 75-175°C encountered in a borehole. [Pg.130]

TPX is considered a high temperature host polymer, which provides scintillator properties. A modified TPX is manufactured under the brand name THERMOSCIN. The material is temperature resistant and has a relatively high hydrogen content as compared to a conventional scintillation material (20). [Pg.130]
