Schieman reaction

In the past the fluorine-18 was introduced onto an aromatic ring of biologically active molecules (as imaging agents in nuclear medicine) primarily by means of the Balz-Schieman reaction (equation 5). 

The Schieman reaction (J ) was cited by Schlesinger (j ) and by Licari and Crepeau (14) as the probable mechanism by which initiators for cationic polymerization are released by diazonium salts. Rutherford et al ( ) showed side reactions to be minimized when the diazonium salt is a hexafluorophosphate. 

Although heat is generally used to promote decomposition of diazonium salts by the Schieman reaction, the reaction has been shown to occur also under the influence of ultraviolet radiation (21, 22) ...
