Scatterplot Construction

Fig. 13. The strategy used for the construction of contoured scatterplots. Positions of metal ions near a carboxyl group are plotted for different crystal structures. The result is a scatterplot. Gaussian peaks are put on each scatterplot point. The resulting density is contoured as for an electron density. The result is a plot of the orientational preferences for binding. Fig. 13. Before complicated statistical models are constructed and run—increasingly easy with more and more powerful statistical computing packages—it is absolutely necessary to describe the basic characteristics of each variable—number of observations, mean, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum. That will reveal which data are below the limits of detection, are missing, are miscoded, and are outliers. If the study involves three or four key variables, associations among the variables should also be examined. Histograms and scatterplots will reveal data structures unanticipated from the numerical summaries. [Pg.146]

The trend seen in the run chart is clearly visible with the spedal cause signal, while warehouse 1 appears to be stable. The center lines for the two warehouses are also different. The team also constructed a scatterplot to see whether the results from the two warehouses on any particular week were related. The scatterplot in Figure 26 showed no relationship in results. [Pg.1824]

As presented in Chapter 5, scatterplots can be useful in graphically presenting the relationships between the variables plotted. The shape of the plotted data points can show the strength and type of the relationship. When constructing a scatterplot, the divisions along the x and y axes should be uniform and labeled. The plot itself should... [Pg.85]
