Two modes of operation of the apparatus are possible (1) The scanning mode in which the sample surface reflectance can be recorded as a function of scanning distance at ambient room temperature or at elevated temperatures and (2) the change in reflectance of the sample as a function o f temperature can be recorded. The former mode is called high-temperature scanning micro-reflectance SMR), while the latter is called dynamic microreflectance (DMR). The use of these two modes is illustrated by the deaquation of CuS0d-5H20. 

Such imaging efforts are important because they prove that SECM may be used to pattern enzymes (Figure 12.32), optimize enzyme architectures, and characterize miniaturized multi-sensor arrays. Patterning of enzymes on surfaces and the long scanning distances of SECM make this an attractive option for enzyme activity assays. In order for them to be used to extract enzyme kinetics, however, a significant amount of work remains to be done.
