In most recovery processes, scandium oxide is converted to its fluoride salt. The fluoride salt is the end product. The fluoride is converted to metallic scandium by heating with calcium in a tantalum crucible at elevated temperatures. A similar reduction is carried out with most rare earths. The metal is purified by distillation at 1,650 to 1,700°C under high vacuum in a tantalum crucible. [Pg.810]

Calcium metal is an excellent reducing agent for production of the less common metals because of the large free energy of formation of its oxides and hahdes. Related to the nitrile oxide cycloadditions presented in Scheme 6.206 are 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of nitrones with alkenes leading to isoxazolidines. The group of Comes-Franchini has described cycloadditions of (Z)-a-phenyl-N-methylnitrone with allylic fluorides leading to enantiopure fluorine-containing isoxazolidines, and ultimately to amino polyols (Scheme 6.207) [374]. The reactions were carried out under solvent-free conditions in the presence of 5 mol% of either scandium(III) or indium(III) triflate. In the racemic series, an optimized 74% yield of an exo/endo mixture of cycloadducts was obtained within 15 min at 100 °C. In the case of the enantiopure allyl fluoride, a similar product distribution was achieved after 25 min at 100 °C. Reduction of the isoxazolidine cycloadducts with lithium aluminum hydride provided fluorinated enantiopure polyols of pharmaceutical interest possessing four stereocenters. [Pg.238]

Scandium forms all its compounds in 3+ oxidation state. This is the only valence known for the metal. These compounds include the oxide, SC2O3 hydroxide, Sc(OH)3 chloride, ScCls fluoride, ScFs sulfate, Sc2(S04)3, and the nitrate salt, Sc(N03)s. [Pg.811]

Extraction of columbate-tantalates, titanocolumbates, and titanosilicates may also be initiated by treatment of the mineral with hydrofluoric acid. The procedure has the advantage that columbium, tantalum, uranium(VI), scandium, titanium, zirconium, and hafnium are dissolved, while silica is volatilized as silicon tetrafluoride and the rare earth elements, together with thorium and uranium(IV), remain as slightly soluble fluorides. The residue is then heated with concentrated sulfuric acid to remove hydrogen fluoride and to oxidize uranium (IV), the thorium is separated by precipitation of the phosphate (synthesis 12), and the rare earths are precipitated as oxalates. [Pg.36]
