Scale Manufacture of a-Amino Acids

In this chapter, an example of the synthesis of an a-amino acid, N-Boc-(S)-3-fluorophenylalanine (Section 2.2.1) is provided, highlighting the process requirements for the 50-200 kg scale. Consideration is then given to more general and practical details necessary to provide an economic process, with reference to other examples. 

The preferred method practiced by Chirotech demonstrates the efficient combination of catalytic technologies, where biocatalysis is used in tandem with catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation. The use of an enzymatic N-acetyl group deprotection has three major advantages
