Sanibel Island

The prominent position of quantum mechanics led a coterie of academic theoreticians to think that their approach could solve research problems facing the pharmaceutical industry. These theoreticians, who met annually in Europe and on Sanibel Island in Florida, invented the new subfields of quantum biology [45] and quantum pharmacology [46]. These names may seem curious to the uninitiated. They were not meant to imply that some observable aspect of biology or pharmacology stems from the wave-particle...

Area A, Figxire 1) Caloosahatchee River downstream from Fort Myers (Area B, Figure 1) and the Matanzas Pass area behind Fort Myers Beach (Area c. Figure 1). A nondeveloped area in an aquatic preserve at Sanibel Island was chosen as the control area (Area D, Figure 1). 

AREA D. This area includes sediment from three sites approximately one mile offshore from Sanibel Island and Captiva Island and oysters and sediment from mangrove fringes within the wildlife preserve on the estuarine side of the Island, representing nonimpacted control areas.

Section IX) was shown to yield not only the various terms of %> but also the Hartree-Fock orbitals themselves [O. Sinanoglu, Rev. Mod. Phys. 35, 517 (1963) (issue dedicated to Sanibel Island Symposium in Honor of E. A. Hylleraas Jan. 1963)]. Thus from an arbitrary trial function y, if it is sufficiently accurate, one can extract the H.F. orbitals without requiring a separate variational calculation. The method was applied to a three-term Hylleraas > x2-t5T w.f. of helium and accurate H.F. orbitals were obtained on a desk calculator (see N. R. Kestner, J. Chetn. Phys., 39, 1361 (1963)).

Coulson s splitting of the community into Group 1 and Group II became the object of a graphical analysis put forward by Pople (1965) during the Sanibel Island Symposium dedicated to Mulliken, and which came later to be known as the "hyperbola of quantum chemistry" (figure 4.4). He depicted the inverse relationship between the size of the molecules under study measured by the number of electrons (horizontal coordinate) and the sophistication of computational methods, the accuracy of their approximations, and the number of features of electron distribution correctly reproduced (vertical coordinate). 

By the time of the 1970 Maryland Conference, which discussed how computational support for theoretical chemistry could be efficiently achieved, it was clear to all quantum chemists that many changes had occurred since the publication of the Heitler and London paper in 1927. Fostered by the organization of scientific meetings, the foundation of the new International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, the creation of summer and winter schools and of the Sanibel Island meetings, and the presence of computers and the developments in hardware and software, the practice of quantum...
