Interaction of iron(II) chloride with the lithium salt of R4B2NJ (R = Me, Et) gives sandwiches 61 (R = Me, Et) (67ZAAC1, 96MI4), resembling in electronic properties those of ferrocene (99ICA(288)17). The n- rf-) complex stems from the further complex-formation of 61 (R = Me, Et) with mercury(II) salts via the unsubstituted nitrogen atom. 

Dihydro-l,3-diborolenes are accessible as pentaorgano derivatives " and serve as ideal precursors of the diborolyl radieal. The formation of the radical and its interaction with a metal center is formally described as a metal oxidation. The resulting 2,3-dihydro-1,3-diborolyI ligand is either a three-electron donor or an anionic four-electron donor. l,3,4,5-Tetraethyl-2-methyl-2,3-dihydro-l,3-diborole reacts with [T -CpNi(CO)2] or (T7 -Cp>2Ni in hot mesitylene to yield a sandwich complex and a triple-decked complex ... 

Eerrocene (1) was the first sandwich complex to be discovered, thereby opening a wide and competitive field of organometallic chemistry. The formation of ferrocene was found at almost the same time in two independent studies on July 11, 1951, Miller, Tebboth, and Tremaine reported that on the passage of N2 and cyclopenta-diene over a freshly prepared mixture of reduced Ee (90%), alumina (8%), potassium oxide (1%), and molybdenum oxide (1%) at 300°C, yellow crystals identified as Cp2Ee (Eig. 1) were obtained [1]. Carboranes also offer the capacity for Co111—C bond formation. Perhaps the best-known example of a mixed cyclopentadienyl-metallocarborane sandwich complex is the cobalt(III) compound (Cp)Co(l,2-C2B9Hn), which serves as a precursor for other species.544... 

The selectivity here is directly proportional to complex formation constants and can be estimated, once the latter are known. Several methods are now available for determination of the complex formation constants and stoichiometry factors in solvent polymeric membranes, and probably the most elegant one is the so-called sandwich membrane method [31], Two membrane segments of different known compositions are placed into contact, which leads to a concentration polarized sensing membrane, which is measured by means of potentiometry. The power of this method is not limited to complex formation studies, but also allows one to quantify ion pairing, diffusion, and coextraction processes as well as estimation of ionic membrane impurity concentrations. 

The reaction of aromatic amino acids, dipeptides, or protected amino acids with [Ru(Cp )(CH3CN)3]PF6 in THF (THF = tetrahydro-furan) leads to the formation of robust Ru(Cp ) sandwich complexes in which side-chain phenyl (e.g., Phe, Tyr) or indole groups (Trp) are bound 7]6 to a Ru(Cp ) center (cf. 31 AA = Phe) (75, 76).
