The share of the herbicide market of individual companies varies with the success that each has found with its discovery programme. Table 1.2 shows the approximate share each major company has of the global herbicide market. The top three companies have launched three very successful compounds that have each managed to establish and maintain a large share of a huge international market - Ciba with atrazine, Monsanto with glyphosate and Zeneca (previously ICI) with paraquat.
