Fehr (1867-1940) of London, trained at the Royal Academy Schools from 1885 and was then a studio assistant to Thomas Brock (1847-1922). He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1887. Robert A.W. Johnstone, Ph.D., is a full professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, U.K. He possesses a D.Sc., a Ph.D., and a B.Sc. in chemistry. He is also a Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). An author and contributor to several books. Dr. Johnstone has published over 200 journal papers in natural product chemistry, catalysis in oxidation and reduction, and spectroscopy. His work has resulted in several new synthetic procedures in organic chemistry that are widely used and have provided some 30 full patents. Part of his research with industry led to a Queen s Award for Technological Achievement, an award not usually given to industrial and business enterprises and not normally given to university staff. The award concerned large-scale manufacture of an important ingredient of timber preservative by a new catalytic method, which produces about 30001 per annum of the product. In a course like this, the question of how much to write about a technique is debatable. One extreme would be to consider only the spectra, and to ignore how they are produced the other is to delve too deeply into the theory of the method, and leave the student uncertain what to look for in the actual spectrum. I have aimed to be closer to the first extreme than the second, since some excellent detailed books on spectroscopy are available. The theory parts of this book cover approximately the same ground as the video tapes on IR, MS, UV, C and H spectra which were made at the University of Liverpool and which are available from the Royal Society of Chemistry. [Pg.283]

Kenner, George Wallace (pp. 24, 81, Plate 27). Born 1922. Graduated in Chemistry, University of Manchester, 1939. His early research was with A.R. Todd at Manchester and then at Cambridge, on purine and pyrimidine chemistry and the synthesis of nucleosides. In 1957 appointed Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry, University of Liverpool. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1964. Just before his death in 1978 he was appointed a Royal Society Research Professor, holding his appointment at Liverpool. [Pg.268]
