Rotationally molded products have walls of uniform thickness that are free of orientation and weld lines. As such they are resistant to environmental stress cracking and are therefore suitable for use in large-scale chemical containment uses. Linear low density polyethylene resins excel in such applications. Storage tanks of up to several thousand gallons capacity are used in agricultural, domestic (septic systems), and industrial applications. On a smaller scale, rotationally molded fuel tanks (chemically treated to reduce diffusion) are used on tractors, cars, and small gasoline-powered appliances. [Pg.494]

Rotational molding is used to form large shells of thermoplastic resin and chopped strands for such appHcations as agricultural tanks and fertilizer hoppers. The resin and chopped glass are placed in the metal mold that is then rotated in an oven where the thermoplastic resin melts and deposits the fiber on the metal surface. In rotational molding of anionically polymerized E-caprolactam one can produce vessels up to 10 m3, fuel tanks of various shapes, and other seamless large-sized items. As a rule, the mold rotates with different speeds about the two axes in such a way that the reactive mixture flows to the mold walls with minimal net centrifugal force.
