Figure 4 shows the results of rolling-contact fatigue tests. The fatigue property was evaluated by the parameter NP which was determined from the mean effective load, Rm in kN times the number of contacts, N in millions. It is obvious that material A and Dl (bearing grade) showed superior NPm values than those of other samples. Material C2 showed the smallest value, which was easily expected from both lowest Young s modulus and hardness, Hv values. [Pg.95]

This work has been supported by METI, Japan, as part of the international standardization project of test methods for rolling contact fatigue and fracture resistance of ceramics for ball bearings. [Pg.98]

Prevention of rolling-contact fatigue is accomplished through proper design and load ratings, lubrication, and the use of through-hardened or case-hardened premium quality (clean) alloy steels. [Pg.77]

Rolling Contact Fatigue of Nitrided 32CrMoV13 Steel... [Pg.297]

This criteria has been calculated for identically made dents on nitrided 32CrMoV13 steel and M50 steel. Numerical results show a significant improvement of nitrided 32CrMoV13 steel to dent initiated rolling contact fatigue over M50, confirmed experimentally. [Pg.308]

Figure 3. Critical stages in wear and rolling contact fatigue. (1) Material subject to rolling-sliding contact may detach as wear debris, or (2) small cracks may develop. (3) Early propagation of cracks will be in the near surface plastically deformed material. (4) Later propagation will be driven by contact stress and fluid pressurisation of the cracks in deeper, elastic, material. (5) As the crack extends it may branch and be driven by rail bending stress. (6) Eventual rail failure occurs by fast fracture after a critical crack length is reached. Figure 3.
