Roll and/or force feeder power. To do the required compaction work a certain power input is necessary which must also overcome the losses in the drive system. It was determined that the powder drawn by the roll drive motor(s) is a relatively sensitive indication of the actual work done by the rolls and, therefore, the quality of the product. In machines with fixed rollers the amperage is also a measure of the roll force. 

Automatic control devices. Modern applications often require automatic control devices which correlate and adjust roll force, gap, and drive motor amperage as well as amperage of the force feeder motor(s). While many different systems are conceivable, a few will be considered to demonstrate the philosophy of such controls. 

Weggel indicated that feed screw torque varies directly with the precompaction pressure (32). He suggested that by maintaining a constant feed screw pressure, the compactor operator can control the compact quality. Variations in precompaction pressure and in the compacting pressures are directly related to feed screw amperages and the roll drive motor.
