Copper(II) binds some 10-fold more strongly to cephalosporins than to penicillins.411,414 Molecular models indicate that one of the conformations of cephalosporins would be very suitable for binding via the carboxylate group and the /8-lactam carbonyl oxygen (124) giving rise to a seven-membered chelate ring. Variations in the /3-lactam carbonyl stretching frequency on com-plexation provide some support for structure (124). 

C-ring variations have by far the most significant influence on pharmacological responses in these series.

Assour and Kahn (3S, 41) have shown from the absence of s.h.f.s. in cobalt phthalocyanine that the unpaired electron is in a orbital. This is supported by the strong dependence of and A, ( Co) on solvent. Indeed, s.h.f.s. are observed from pyridine and other solvent molecules weakly coordinating to the 5- and 6-coordination positions. The two crystallographic forms of cobalt phthalocyanine, a and have markedly different g and A( Co) parameters. In the jS phase, the distance between nearest neighbor molecules must be less than in the a form. The low value of g, (which should equal 2.0023) arises from admixture of 4s and orbitals and interactions between cobalt and N atoms in molecules above and below the ring. The benzophenone form illustrates the relationship to the quinazolinone series of diuretics. It may be regarded as an open ring variation. 

Products of the phenylpropanoid pathway. These compounds, commonly referred to as polyphenols, are derived from cinnamic acid and include the xanthones and flavonoids. The basic structural unit of the flavonoid family (Fig. 1) comprises two benzene rings linked through a heterocyclic pyran or pyrone ring (C ring) variations in the C ring and the extent of hydroxylation define the major classes [4].
