Ring sets

As the number of rods is increased, the rate of increase in ion efficiency falls off, and the devices become more difficult to construct. Consequently, quadrupoles and hexapoles are used most frequently in commercial instruments. More recently, the concept has been extended to a set of ring electrodes, which are the most efficient ion guides (Figure 49.8). Flowever, although the ring set (ion tunnel) uses RF fields similar to the ones outlined here, there are sufficient differences that are not discussed here. 

All atoms with more than one neighbor are checked for valid ring closures using the procedure described above and are added to the set of rings if the found ring is not already a member of the ring set. 

Woolfolk estimated a 3 cubic ft. (85 L) test tank (or accumulator) rated at 500 psig (3450 kPa gauge) would provide a representative pop action for an SRV with a normal blown-down ring setting up to and including a 3-inch L orifice SRV. Figure 34 compares the residence time distribution in the influence zone of a single set of ring internals at location 3, which is 0.55 m downstream of tracer injection, with and without the ring set. The decrease of solids backmixing is shown by an increase of the Peclet number from 1.06 to 2.46, and from 1.97 to 3.61, when the ring set is used, for gas velocities of 1.75 and 2.62 m/s, respectively.

Hydraulic arbor lockup nuts have become a standard in the industry. Unfortunately, research on these nuts and their effect on tooling has been sparse. A test that we have done and recommend for every application where hydraulic nuts are used is as follows. After confirming arbor and slitter-head tolerance specifications by making a setup that is clean (shimless and without stripper rings), set the overlap to zero, and, with a dial caliper, check and record each male and female size from the outside face of the knives. Be sure to remove by carefully stoning any grinding burr from the knife faces.
