The amino acids L-leucine, T-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine, and L-tryptophan all taste bitter, whereas their D-enantiomers taste sweet (5) (see Amino ACIDS). D-Penicillamine [52-67-5] a chelating agent used to remove heavy metals from the body, is a relatively nontoxic dmg effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, but T.-penicillamine [1113-41 -3] produces optic atrophy and subsequent blindness (6). T.-Penicillamine is roughly eight times more mutagenic than its enantiomer. Such enantioselective mutagenicity is likely due to differences in renal metaboHsm (7). The first two selective COX-2 inhibitors to be marketed and subjected to in depth clinical trials were celecoxib and rofecoxib. Anticytokine antibodies Infliximab Chimeric (mouse/human) monoclonal antibody against TNEa. Effective in the treatment of severe forms of rheumatoid arthritis where it can halt disease progression, or inflammatory bowel disease (EBD). 

IL-1 receptor antagonist Anakinra A naturally occurring complete antagonist, effective in rheumatoid arthritis. 

Low-dose methotrexate is used for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis despite side effects such as disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and the liver. Leflunomide is also approved for this indication, however, hepatoxicity limits its use as first option. 

IFN- 3 reduces the induction by inflammatory cytokines of adhesion molecules and of MHC class I and II complex on endothelial cells, a process preceding attachment and transendothelial migration of T-cells. These anti-inflammatory effects of IFN- 3 exemplify antagonistic actions of type I and type IIIFN. There is, indeed, much clinical evidence for the involvement of IFN-y in inflammatory processes - through activation of iNOS and subsequent secretion of NO - leading to the establishment of autoimmune diseases as for instance in rheumatoid arthritis.

Interestingly, Au(I) compounds are very effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and there is recent evidence that certain go Id-containing compounds have anticancer properties.
