What happened The surgeiy went well and the young patient was transferred to the medical intensive care unit (MICU). During the afternoon some blood studies returned abnormal results and his temperature began to climb. Assuming these symptoms were caused by loss of blood during surgeiy, doctors ordered a transfusion of red blood cells. 

Recent advances have been made in employing optical fibres to allow the study of samples remote from the spectrometer. Essentially a fibre optic redirects the light from the sample compartment to the external sample, with another returning the resultant beam back to the detector. By these means absorption can be monitored by either transmission or reflectance, using remote cells, surface probes and submersible probes. 

Studies of the stereochemical course of rmcleophilic substitution reactions are a powerful tool for investigation of the mechanisms of these reactions. Bimolecular direct displacement reactions by the limSj.j2 meohanism are expected to result in 100% inversion of configuration. The stereochemical outcome of the lirnSj l ionization mechanism is less predictable because it depends on whether reaction occurs via one of the ion-pair intermediates or through a completely dissociated ion. Borderline mechanisms may also show variable stereochemistry, depending upon the lifetime of the intermediates and the extent of internal return. It is important to dissect the overall stereochemical outcome into the various steps of such reactions. 

One useful practical result of the study crystallizer dynamics is that it can take about eight residence times for the CSD to achieve steady state after start up or return to it following a disturbance, as illustrated in Figure 7.12.
