Resistance population genetics

Even if after enormous effort and investment a new approach clears all these hurdles and can be used in practice, we shall find no victory over pests to be permanent. The loss of vulnerability through the development of resistance will always be a threatening possibility. This is why it is so crucial that much greater effort be devoted to understanding the population, genetic, and biochemical basis of the development of resistance to control measures in general. 

The source of the insecticide resistance problem is traced ultimately from biochemical mechanisms to changes in nucleic acid chemistry of genes which confer resistance. Advances in genetics and recombinant DNA have provided the opportunity for detailed study of genes that produce biochemically resistant populations. 

Origin or Consequence In light of these studies, it appears that the genetic structure of a resistant population is not the image of the ancestral structure of the population from which resistant plants originated. Therefore, it is difficult to draw a conclusion about a peculiar genetic structure promoting the appearance of atrazine resistant plants.
