Residual values of fertilisers and manures

The nutrients in most manures and fertilisers are not used up completely in the year of application. The amount likely to remain for use in the following years is taken into acconnt when compensating outgoing farm tenants. 

Up to 70% of nitrogen in soluble nitrogen fertihsers (e.g. ammonium nitrate and some other compounds) is used in the first year. For phosphate in soluble form, e g. triple superphosphate and compounds containing phosphate, allow two-thirds after one crop, one-third after two and one-sixth after three crops. For phosphate in insolnble form, e.g. bone meal and ground mineral phosphate, allow one-third after one crop, one-sixth after two and one-twelfth after three. For potash, e.g. muriate or sulphate of potash and compounds containing potash, allow a half after one crop and a quarter after two crops. For lime one eighth of the cost is subtracted each year after application. 

The NSA scheme involved small changes in hnsbandty only the economic optimum, or less, of nitrogen for some crops was allowed, but the timing and amount applied at any one time were restricted. Reviews of the regulations have been recently carried out and new updates have been added to the scheme in May and November of 2013. A NVZ is designated on all land contributing to polluted waters, i.e. surface or ground water that contains, or is likely to contain if no action is taken, more than 50 mg/ litre of nitrates, or is, or likely to become, eutrophic. 

If farmers do not comply with the rules of NVZs they can be prosecuted, fined and may lose some of their Single Payment. If their farm is in an NVZ they must
