Hybrid Crystallization/Adsorption Process. In 1994, IFP and Chevron announced the development of a hybrid process that reportedly combines the best features of adsorption and crystallization (59,99). In this option of the Eluxyl process, the adsorbent bed is used to initially produce PX of 90—95% purity. The PX product from the adsorption section is then further purified in a small single-stage crystallizer and the filtrate is recycled back to the adsorption section. It is reported that ultrahigh (99.9+%) purity PX can be produced easily and economically with this scheme for both retrofits of existing crystallization units as well as grass-roots units. A demonstration plant was built at Chevron s Pascagoula refinery in 1994. 

There is great interest in developing molecular precursors for boron-nitrogen polymers and boron nitride solid state materials, and one general procedure is described in this report. Combinations of B-trichloroborazene and hexamethyldisilazane lead to formation of a gel which, upon thermolysis, gives hexagonal boron nitride. The BN has been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, x-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy.

The effectiveness of a combined reduction-biological treatment system for the decolorization of nonbiodegradable textile dyeing wastewater has been investigated. The bench-scale experimental comparison of this technique with other reported combined chemical-biological methods showed higher efficiency and lower cost for the new technique [35].

As noted earlier, the diffraction of X-rays, unlike the diffraction of neutrons, is primarily sensitive to the distribution of 00 separations. Although many of the early studies 9> of amorphous solid water included electron or X-ray diffraction measurements, the nature of the samples prepared and the restricted angular range of the measurements reported combine to prevent extraction of detailed structural information. The most complete of the early X-ray studies is by Bon-dot 26>. Only scanty description is given of the conditions of deposition but it appears likely his sample of amorphous solid water had little or no contamination with crystalline ice. He found a liquid-like distribution of 00 separations at 83 K, with the first neighbor peak centered at 2.77 A. If the pair correlation function is decomposed into a superposition of Gaussian peaks, the area of the near neighbor peak is found to correspond to 4.23 molecules, and to have a root mean square width of 0.50 A. 

Other examples of Ugi reactions combined with RCM have been described in the literature. Hebach and Kazmaier reported the synthesis of conformationally fixed cyclic peptides [70] and Beck and Domling synthesized biaryl-containing natural product-like macrocycles using this method [41]. The same group also reported combination of Passerini and Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions to obtain butenolides [67] and another variation for the combinatorial synthesis of thiazoles [69]. 

Users have reported combining BZP with alcohol, Xanax, dextromethorphan, marijuana, and hydrocodone, and have described most of the experiences as frightening or unpleasant.

Following a single oral dose of 5 mg to 9 subjects, peak plasma concentrations of 0.028 to 0.045 pg/ml (mean 0.04) were attained in 0.5 to 4 hours (D. D. Breimerer a/.,. fir. J. din. Pharmac., 1911, 4, 709-711). Following daily oral doses of 5 mg to 4 subjects, steady-state plasma-nitrazepam concentrations of 0.035 to 0.044 pg/ml (mean 0.04) were reported combined steady-state concentrations of the, 7-amino and 7-acetamido metabolites were in the range 0.018 to 0.053 pg/ml (mean 0.03) (J. Rieder and G. Wendt, Pharmacokinetics and Metabolism of the Hypnotic Nitrazepam, in The Benzodiazepines, S. Garattini, E. Mussini and L. O. Randall (Ed.), New York, Raven Press, 1973, pp. 99-127). 

Mossbauer spectroscopy (see Mossbauer Spectroscopy) has been used to look at a number of matrix-isolated species. However, the absence of structural information makes it appropriate to combine Mossbauer spectroscopy with other methods. Peden etal. report combined IR and Mossbauer spectra for the products of condensing iron vapor with CO Fe(CO)x (x = 1-5) and Fe2(CO)j, (y = 8 or 9). The Mossbauer spectra also reveal the presence of umeacted iron atoms in the solid CO, which, of course, caimot be seen in IR absorption. 

Work combining MS and degradation data have also been presented. - Oxidative elimination of the polynucleotide with periodic acid cleaves the 3 -connected nucleotide chain. The terminal base thus liberated is then analyzed, and the process is repeated until the end of the sequence. Another report combined MS with enzymatic digestion data, in particular, the selective cleavage by venom phosphoesterase of the oligonucleotide chain from the 3 end. The separation of nucleotides on a Dowex column and subsequent derivatization leads to the determination of both 5 and 3 terminal nucleotides according to Scheme 1. 

As an innovation, this year s Report combines the usual section on Properties and Reactions with the subject of Partial Synthesis into a single chapter. In earlier volumes, selection of subject matter for two separate chapters has perforce been somewhat arbitrary, and has not infrequently resulted in some duplication of material, where authors chose to emphasize different facets of the same piece of work. The present chapter retains the classification of Properties and Reactions used in previous volumes, but groups into additional sections the work which was concerned in particular with aspects of synthesis.
