Bias The systematic or persistent distortion of an estimate from the true value. From sampling theory, bias is a characteristic of the sample estimator of the sufficient statistics for the distribution of interest. Therefore, bias is not a function of the data, but of the method for estimating the population statistics. For example, the method for calculating the sample mean of a normal distribution is an unbiased estimator of the true but unknown population mean. Statistical bias is not a Bayesian concept, because Bayes theorem does not relay on the long-term frequency expections of sample estimators. 

It may turn out that one of the most important legacies of molecular control is its linkage to inversion of laboratory data to learn about molecules. The full embodiment of this concept again embraces feedback, as a relay of control and inversion can be envisioned to learn about molecules in the most efficient manner.

In addition, as stated above, the catalytic active center forms the charge-relay system and creates a high activity in the catalysis. Recent NMR studies support the concept of the charge-relay system (5, 6). By the theoretical calculation the importance of the charge-relay is also discussed (7). In both cases where Asp is absent, and where the water molecule is in place of His, the potential barrier of the reaction becomes higher and the substrate plays a role of reduction of the potential barrier of the reaction by 0.21 eV. 

In the midst of these aircraft investigations and numerous routine problems of the section, Dunmore was wrestling in his own mind, impelled thereto solely by his own scientific curiosity, with the subject of substituting house-lighting alternating current for direct battery current to power radio apparatus. The conception of the application of alternating current concerned particularly broadcast reception and was in no way related to the remote control relay devised for aircraft use. This idea was conceived by Dunmore Aug. 3, 1921, and he reduced the invention to practice Dec. 16, 1921. Early in 1922 he advised his superior of his invention and spent additional time in perfecting the details. On Feb. 27, 1922, he filed an application for a patent. 

Another significant application of the concept of relay deprotection comes from a synthesis of the antitumour macrolides Cryptophycins 1 and 8.644 The penultimate step required a mild method for the introduction of the epoxide ring in the side chain [Scheme 4.340]. A variant of a direct method for the conversion of diols to epoxides developed by Kolb and Sharpless645 was cleverly adapted to the case at hand. Thus diol 340.1 was treated with the 4-azido-1 1,1-tri-methoxybutane in the presence of chlorotrimethylsilane to give the cyclic orthoester 340.2, which decomposed under the reaction conditions with loss of Me SiOMe to give the chlorohydrin ester 3403 (inversion). Enzyme biosensors containing pol3mieric electron transfer systems have been studied for more than a decade. One of the earlier systems was first reported by Degani and Heller [1,2] using electron transfer relays to improve electrochemical assay of substrates. Soon after Okamoto, Skotheim, Hale and co-workers reported various flexible polymeric electron transfer systems appUed to amperometric enz5une biosensors [3-16], Heller and co-workers further developed a concept of wired amperometric enzyme electrodes [17—27] to increase sensor accuracy and stability.
