To increase the ability to form bonds between CNTs and sol-gel silica, the main method employed is to use FCNTs in which different types of radicals are added to the CNT structure. It has been observed that functionalization reduces the strength of the CNTs, but this loss is overcome by the increase observed in the load transfer to the matrix used [85-87]. On the other hand, different methods have been developed for the disentanglement of the CNTs and the sol-gel route is one of the most feasible ones because it is the only one that allows obtaining a dispersion in a liquid or sol phase that will become a solid afterward. With these new types of reinforcements, sol-gel silica coatings with improved properties, particularly mechanical resistance and toughness, can be obtained [88].
