In 1928 the British bacteriologist Alexander Fleming observed the antibiotic effect of the mold Penicillium notatum, and the active agent penicillin was isolated by the Australian pathologist Howard Florey and the German refugee biochemist Ernst Chain. The need to treat massive numbers of infected wounds in World War II led to a major development effort to produce penicillin in quantity. In 1964 the chemist Dorothy Hodgkin received a Nobel Prize for her X-ray determination of the structures of penicillin, as well as vitamin B 2 and insulin.

A substantial number of the 12 million refngees and 22-25 million internally displaced persons worldwide have been uprooted from their homes due to war or the threat of war.
