In 1928 the British bacteriologist Alexander Fleming observed the antibiotic effect of the mold Penicillium notatum, and the active agent penicillin was isolated by the Australian pathologist Howard Florey and the German refugee biochemist Ernst Chain. The need to treat massive numbers of infected wounds in World War II led to a major development effort to produce penicillin in quantity.
