For a CCD detector the absorbance noise is independent of the spectral bandwidth, but it depends on the number of measurement pixels sam and reference pixels ref in such a way that sam should be as small as possible and rel should be larger than sam. The other component that influences the noise is the intensity I of the radiation source, in that the absorbance noise is inversely proportional to the square root of I [12]. As the intensity of the radiation source in CS AAS is in some cases up to two orders of magnitude higher than that of a typical LS for conventional AAS, an improvement in the SNR and limits of detection (LoD) by factors of 3-10 could be expected, unless other factors, such as flame noise, become dominant. The values given in Table 4.1 show that this expectation has in fact been realized for the majority of the elements. [Pg.99]

Besides the intensity of the radiation source, its stability obviously also plays an important role, and arcs are notorious for their instability. However, as this instability results for a small wavelength interval of some tenths of a nanometer in a wavelength-independent, white noise, which causes an identical noise pattern on all the pixels of the CCD array, it can easily be cancelled out with the use of reference pixels, as already discussed. [Pg.100]

In HR-CS AAS it is only necessary to select two reference pixels, the so-called background correction pixels (BCP), as discribed in Section 5.2.1, symmetrically at both sides of the arsenic wavelength in order to correct for this spectral interference, as shown in Figure 8.51. [Pg.266]

Supervised segmentation methods work defining the different pixel classes beforehand with a series of well-identified pixels. Each different class is described by a model and these models are used to assign unknown pixels to the predefined classes. A CCD is a two-dimensional array of silicon photosensors, each photosensor usually being referred to as a pixel. Multiway and particularly three-way analysis of data has become an important subject in chemometrics. This is the result of the development of hyphenated detection methods (such as in combined chromatography-spectrometry) and yields three-way data structures the ways of which are defined by samples, retention times and wavelengths. In multivariate process analysis, three-way data are obtained from various batches, quality measures and times of observation [55]. In image analysis, the three modes are formed by the horizontal and vertical coordinates of the pixels within a frame and the successive frames that have been recorded. In this rapidly developing field one already finds an extensive body of literature and only a brief outline can be given here. For a more comprehensive reading and a discussion of practical applications we refer to the reviews by Geladi [56], Smilde [57] and Henrion [58]. [Pg.153]
