PHAs are moisture-resistant and have gas barrier properties similar to the best coated Aims. They have potential use as plastic moisture barriers. Possible markets include mulch Aims, food and agricultural packaging, drink cartons, feminine hygiene products, disposable diapers, and disposable kitchen items, such as plastic Aims which are difficult to separate for recycling. In the early 1990s, composting and recycling of disposable diapers were actively considered in the United States, Canada and Europe. For composting, a biodegradable component such as pulp and superabsorbent polymer are used after removing the plastic back panel and tape. The compost has excellent water retention and can be used for soil improvement. Techniques to remove those plastics are now under development. [Pg.910]

Standard for Sanitary Products (Decree by Minister, No. 285) prohibits used paper to be employed for sanitary products in order to maintain safety and sanitation. A similar self-imposed standard for disposable diapers for babies also prohibits the use of recycled p er.
